Petit Verdot 2016

April 18, 2026

From “Little Green” to Bold Virginia Beauty

Estate Grown and Bottled at Hiddencroft Vineyards

In the world of wine, Petit Verdot has long played the role of a supporting character—an aromatic and tannic splash in Bordeaux blends, added in small amounts for depth and structure. Its name, which translates from French as “Little Green,” reveals its biggest challenge in its native France: inconsistent ripening. Vintners in Bordeaux often found their grape clusters spotted with stubborn, unripe green berries. For centuries, it was a finicky grape—capable of greatness but only under ideal conditions.

Here in Virginia, however, Petit Verdot finds its voice.

Our vineyard’s climate and soils coax this once-temperamental grape into consistent ripening. Gone are the green holdouts. Instead, our Petit Verdot ripens evenly, developing rich, concentrated flavors that shine both as a blending component and as a stand-alone varietal. At Hiddencroft Vineyards, we use Petit Verdot in our Dutchman’s Creek Blend, but we also craft a 100% estate-grown version that demands attention all on its own.

Tasting Notes

This current vintage of our Petit Verdot is bold and assertive, yet elegant. Aromas of black cherry and ripe plum rise from the glass, followed by deep, layered flavors of dark fruit and structured tannins. Its long barrel aging—4 ½ years in oak—has softened its edges while amplifying its complexity.

The Takeaway
Once overlooked as a minor grape, Petit Verdot has found new life in Virginia. Here at Hiddencroft, it’s not just a component of a blend—it’s a showcase of what this grape can achieve when given the right conditions and the right care. This vintage proves that “Little Green” can grow up into something unforgettable.
